Atletico Madrid come into this match after a series of mixed results to start their season, but with cause to believe that they can cause an upset at Anfield.

Liverpool meanwhile, have won four games in-a-row without looking at their scintillating best.

Here are things you need to know about Atletico Madrid ahead of their visit to Anfield.

Atletico Madrid’s Key Players

Atleti will be without a number of key players, including Julian Alvarez who picked up an injury last weekend.

Midfielder Johnny Cardoso will miss the trip, so too will centre-back Jose Maria Gimenez, as well as creative midfielders Alex Baena and Thiago Almada.

They do still have plenty of talent at their disposal, namely 34-year-old France forward Antoine Griezmann, who is now in his fourth season of his second spell in Madrid after leaving Barcelona.

Atletico can also call on Griezmann’s former teammate, centre-back Clement Lenglet, as well as long-time servants goalkeeper Jan Oblak and captain Koke.

Midfielder Conor Gallagher will be familiar to Liverpool supporters after his spells at Crystal Palace and Chelsea.

Atletico Madrid's Recent form

Atletico Madrid began the season with defeat at RCD Espanyol, having conceded two second-half goals, they had initially taken the lead through Julian Alvarez.

They followed that up with two 1-1 draws against Elche and Alaves, both matches in which Atletico took the lead.

Journeyman striker Alexander Sorloth opened the scoring in the first game, while Giuliano Simeone scored in the second.

Last Saturday, Atletico got their first win of the La Liga season on the board against Villarreal thanks to goals from Pablo Barrios and Nico Gonzalez, as Alvarez was pulled off at half-time due to injury.

Atletico qualified for the Champions League by finishing third in last season’s La Liga table.

Atleti last won the La Liga title in 2021 and have not won the Copa Del Rey since 2013 as they have struggled to truly smash Spanish football’s duopoly during Diego Simeone’s successful reign as manager.

Meetings between the teams

Liverpool and Atletico Madrid have met eight times, and the teams have both won three games each.

The most recent meetings came in the group stage of the Champions League in 2021, with Liverpool winning both encounters against Luis Suarez’s Atleti.

In the 2-0 win at Anfield, Trent Alexander-Arnold whipped the ball in behind the defence for Diogo Jota to head home.

Sadio Mane tapped home Trent Alexander-Arnold’s miscued shot to double Liverpool’s margin of victory.

Atletico Madrid bested Liverpool just before the Covid lockdown, beating the Reds after extra time at Anfield.

They also knocked Liverpool out over two legs in the 2010 Europa League semi-finals thanks to Diego Forlan’s extra-time goal.

Particularly in the Simeone era, there has been a notable contrast in styles in the few meetings, with Atletico aiming to counter Liverpool’s attacking football.
