If you follow Liverpool on social media, you’re likely familiar with the team’s tradition after wins—sharing selfies featuring one or more of the goal scorers or contributors.

You may have noticed Mo Salah’s joyous expression in a casual selfie this season; he has been the team's top scorer.

This time, however, when he confidently posed with Virgil van Dijk—who scored the game-winning goal against West Ham—the moment felt particularly special.

Liverpool looked like they'd secure a clean-sheet win until a defensive error stroke the delighting peace. A defensive miscue involving van Dijk led to an own goal by Andy Robertson in the 86th minute, allowing the opponent to tie the score.

I heard him (Robertson) shout but listen, these things unfortunately happen. Obviously there was time to make it right and luckily we did,” van Dijk told Sky Sports post-match.

However, Liverpool responded just three minutes later, Alexis Mac Allister delivered a well-placed corner into the box, where the Dutchman rose above the defense to head the ball into the net, redeeming his earlier error and restoring Liverpool's lead.

We train a lot on it and I try to be important. Finally today I could score the winner. On to the next.” van Dijk said. “I can tell you I’m very proud today to captain my 100th (league) game for Liverpool."

While we are still waiting for the official announcement about his extension, the Dutch international’s latest heroics not only rescued Liverpool from an awkward draw, but also rescued his 100th Premier League appearance as Captain for the Reds.

With Liverpool having only two wins left to secure the title, his game-winner bolstered the team’s momentum.

Big Things Coming Up

Everyone knows how much I love this club and let’s see what next week will look like,” van Dijk said after the 2-1 win, hinting at the message of his contract situation.

While he said contract talks are progressing, van Dijk’s focus remains firmly on securing three points and winning the title.

Slot reinforced this idea by stressing that while extending contracts is a crucial long-term goal, the immediate focus is on achieving two more victories—especially with the crucial match against Leicester City approaching.

Slot’s remarks underscore a larger viewpoint: in a season where each point is fiercely contested in the Premier League, players and staff prioritize performance over off-field contract discussions.

Recent reports indicate that Virgil is nearing an agreement on a new contract that would extend his time at Liverpool for an additional two years.

This extension would not only recognize the defender’s prominent performances and leadership but also secure his future amid ongoing transfer rumors.

Before Liverpool could really seek the best replacement, the way van Dijk stepped up, made up his fault and capitalized the corner with a renewed trust and continuing reliance from the club and Kopites.
