Liverpool have stepped in to block James McConnell’s proposed loan move to Preston North End as head coach Andoni Iraola acts to protect his options in the middle of the pitch.
The 21-year-old midfielder appeared destined for Deepdale on a temporary basis to secure regular Championship experience, particularly following a challenging period out on loan at Ajax. Preston believed they had everything lined up after guaranteeing starting minutes, but Liverpool called a halt to proceedings in recent days following direct discussions inside the AXA Training Centre according to recent reports that have emerged.
The dramatic late shift comes against the backdrop of Curtis Jones’ imminent departure.Inter Milan have struck an agreement to sign the 25-year-old in a package deal worth around £30 million, bringing an end to his long association with his boyhood club.
With Jones heading to Serie A and questions continuing to linger over Wataru Endo’s ultimate role, Liverpool’s senior midfield dynamic had suddenly threatened to run surprisingly light. Beyond a frontline core of Alexis Mac Allister, Dominik Szoboszlai, and Ryan Gravenberch, depth across a long domestic and European campaign was fast becoming a pressing concern.
Opportunities knock for young stars
Rather than entering the opening weeks of the season short on central cover, Iraola stepped in to block McConnell’s departure. Having impressed Iraola during summer sessions, the youngster trained alongside the first-team squad ahead of the upcoming trip to face Newcastle United at St James' Park. What originally looked like another developmental loan away from Merseyside has rapidly evolved into a genuine chance to establish himself in Liverpool's senior setup.
