Liverpool Women have confirmed the departure of record £300k signing Denise O'Sullivan to Gotham FC on a season-long loan deal with an obligation to buy.

Liverpool Women are facing another significant summer of change as preparations continue for the new season, with the club looking to bounce back from a deeply disappointing 2025/26 campaign.

After already strengthening the side this summer, there has been widespread optimism that real progress could be made in the months ahead.

However, attention behind the scenes has now turned towards a high-profile exit that has caught many by surprise given how recently the player arrived on Merseyside.

It has been confirmed by Liverpool FC Women that an agreement has been reached for their club-record signing to join Gotham FC on an initial loan deal with an obligation to buy.

While a substantial transfer fee is expected to be received by the Reds softening the financial blow losing such an important asset just six months after a heavy investment represents a frustrating setback for Gareth Taylor’s plans.

The Republic of Ireland international was signed in January from North Carolina Courage for a historic £300,000 fee, arriving with the distinct reputation of being one of the most accomplished midfielder in women's football.

A regular presence was quickly established in the starting lineup throughout the second half of the 2025/26 campaign.

Crucial contributions were delivered immediately. A memorable goal on debut against London Bees helped kickstart a run to the semi-finals of the Adobe Women’s FA Cup, which was later accompanied by another fine strike against Brighton & Hove Albion Women.

Ultimately, the playmaker's qualities were required to help a struggling Liverpool side away from relegation disaster.

The team endured a grueling year, finishing just one place above the relegation places after winning only four games and collecting 17 points from 22 matches.

While top-flight survival was successfully secured, the environment was far from what was envisioned when the marquee January transfer was finalised. Personal reasons are understood to have heavily influenced the desire to return to the United States.

Returning to a NWSL dynasty

Her status across the Atlantic is legendary;184 regular-season appearances have been made the 18th most in league history alongside 166 starts, five goals, and 18 assists.

The midfielder was a very influencial in the dominant Courage dynasty that achieved the double winning both the NWSL Shield and NWSL Championship in consecutive years in 2018 and 2019. Further silverware was claimed in the form of the 2017 NWSL Shield and the 2018 International Champions Cup, where heavyweights Paris Saint-Germain and Lyon were defeated.

When the switch to Anfield was secured in January, the player spoke candidly about the pride of representing a club of Liverpool's stature and the comfort of being a short flight away from family in Ireland.Yet, the allure of joining the defending NWSL champions in New York proved impossible to turn down when Gotham FC made their formal approach.

Following the formal confirmation of the deal, a classy farewell message was shared with the Liverpool Women supporters reflecting on pride in wearing the red shirt.

To all the Liverpool supporters, I just want to say a huge thank you,” the midfielder said. “Representing Liverpool and playing in the WSL, so close to home, was something I was incredibly proud to do. From the moment I arrived, you made me feel welcome, and your support never went unnoticed.

“The Liverpool family is a special one. It doesn’t matter how long you spend at a club, it’s the feeling of representing the badge that stays with you forever.

“Wishing everyone at the club nothing but success in the seasons ahead. Thank you for everything.”

Ultimately, the brief transfer of the experienced midfielder will be viewed as a costly, albeit necessary, short-term fix. While the initial £300,000 outlay raised eyebrows, the primary objective of securing Women’s Super League survival was achieved even if the manner of the campaign left much to be desired.

Losing a player of such immense pedigree so soon undoubtedly disrupts Gareth Taylor's tactical blueprint, but the reality of modern football dictates that keeping an unsettled player rarely provides success.

The focus must now pivot entirely to the recruitment staff to find a few reinforcements if they are to avoid another grueling battle at the wrong end of the table.
