Liverpool fans were full conspiracies yesterday as transfer target Virgil van Dijk came to Anfield with Southampton and put in an interesting performance.

This was kind of inevitable. The very public transfer pursuit by Liverpool of Southampton captain Virgil van Dijk was always going to lead to an awkward encounter between the two sides at Anfield.

The Reds made the Dutchman their number one defensive target last summer but were unable to get Southampton to the table. The player was keen on a move and personal terms had been agreed with his camp.

Then news of a deal became public before Liverpool had agreed a fee with the Saints sparking a summer long stand-off between the two clubs. Recent news tells us that Liverpool still want van Dijk at Anfield and will make a move in January for the dominate defender.

After making an error yesterday for Mohamed Salah’s second goal in the 3-0 rout many Liverpool fans took to Twitter to post their conspiracy theories; van Dijk is a secret agent for the Reds!

It is hard to know if Liverpool supporters should be happy or worried by his performance. On the one hand he helped give the Reds three valuable Premier League points. On the other hand it raises the question if he is as accident prone as the current center back options.

If you are taking the conspiracy theories even further then you could say that perhaps van Dijk was helping reduce the price for his suitors. Southampton are looking for around £70 million for the defender. A few more games like that and maybe we can get his price under £50 million!

Many Reds fans are hoping that Virgil van Dijk will be wearing the red of Liverpool when the two sides face each other at St. Mary’s stadium on February 10th.
