Liverpool player ratings: Midfield

Even though Emre Can has played as much as any Liverpool player over the last few months but Klopp does not feel able to rest the only midfielder with a defensive instinct. COnfident on the ball and strong in the tackle he benefits from having the pass-first partners of Henderson and Milner next to him.. Center Midfield. Liverpool. EMRE CAN. 7

Liverpool. JORDAN HENDERSON. 8. Shared the deep role with Can as a double pivot at the base of midfield as Liverpool’s main aim was to protect the advantage and progress. Despite the role being more defensive in tasks he had plenty of opportunity to spread the play forward as gaps opened up on the counter attack. Picked up a yellow after nasty little tackle on Felipe’s ankle.. Center Midfield

7. James Milner has become essential to Liverpool in Europe’s premier competition. His experience and leadership have been vital. He has also chipped in with a bunch of assists – leading the Champions League in that category. The pace of the games suits him better than the endless hustle of the Premier League. He had his head in his hands early in the second half as he should have scored but leaned back and the ball screwed wide.. Center Midfield. Liverpool. JAMES MILNER
