Liverpool playmaker Adam Lallana’s statement on Danny Ings after his West Brom goal will melt your soul.

The former Bournemouth and Burnley forward hit the back of the net for the first time in 930 days as he opened the scoring after just four minutes on Saturday.

Ings last goal came in 2015 against Everton, which is a pretty special moment in itself. It also came during Brendan Rodgers’ last game as Reds manager.

It was his fifth ever start in three years. His fourth goal for the club. After 498 days out following two knee injuries, Ings finally had his goal.

And you could see what it meant to the once-capped England international as he let his emotions fly. He raged against the sky as teammates rushed to mob him. The goal symbolizes rehabilitation but also a way back for the fox-in-the-box. It’ll be the feel-good story of the year if manager Jurgen Klopp keeps him at the club and Ings goes on to repay that faith.

The striker must also be a popular figure around Melwood, and that’s typified by what Lallana posted on Instagram after his goal. The playmaker wasn’t even involved in the game – he’s facing his own injury daemons. But the words he chose will melt your soul, even if you don’t have one.

Klopp handed Ings a start as he chose to rest Roberto Firmino. He was chosen over Dominic Solanke, which tells its own story, and repaid that selection almost instantly.

The ex-Claret should have had a penalty, too, and appeared to have been punched by Baggies defender Ahmed Hegazi. Hegazi took advantaged of Ings lying prone on the floor to deliver his blow, and will surely be punished by the FA.

It might not be the result Liverpool wanted, and Ings graciously said he’d swap the goal for three points. But whatever the score, his goal is hugely important and the reaction speaks volumes about the strength of the squad.
