Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has picked Adam Lallana as part of the 23 man Champions League squad for the Roma game, but we still need to write him off.

Or at least, Lallana should be considered a write-off for the 2017/2018 season. It’s time for him to pack his bags, sort his fitness out and attack 2018/2019 like a bricklayer in a warzone.

Trying to get the former Southampton  man back to full fitness is a commendable effort and you’ve got to try, but we’ve seen that he takes a long time to regain that match sharpness and he definitely won’t be ready by the end of the season.

The high-presser was reintroduced with extreme caution after his thigh injury and it didn’t work. This further complication pours more misery on an already poor season and all these efforts to get Lallana back into the side are starting to smell a bit desperate.

Liverpool have got an excellent team right now, and the disruption of forcing an injured square peg into a round hole should also be avoided. The midfield three of Jordan Henderson, James Milner and Georginio Wijnaldum should be good enough to see the squad home.

If Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain hadn’t picked up that blow the question would be a no brainer: even if Lallana could get fit, a spot in the side wasn’t guaranteed. The news that the Ox will now miss the rest of the campaign makes forcing Lallana back very tempting, but it’s still one that should be ignored.

Putting this much care and attention towards getting the 29-year-old ready for the 2018/2019 campaign should hold the team in excellent stead. When fit, Lallana is a key part of how manager Jurgen Klopp plays.

He presses, he never rests, he scores, he creates. He is Klopp’s dream. He has been missed, but he’s been missed for long enough that the team has adapted. Let’s keep it that way, and bring him back firing.
