The news that Liverpool starlet Rhian Brewster could leave the club on a free transfer highlights a key Premier League flaw.

You see, the domestic game in this country is big business. People expect instant results. Patience is not a virtue, and that hurts managers.

With all the money floating around, quick fixes are the preferred solution at most clubs. Youth struggles to break through and talented youngsters often spend their formative years stagnating at U23 level.

The Premier League can claim to be one of the best leagues in the world, but all that success is self defeating if it doesn’t serve the national interest. It becomes a paradox if it forces clubs to look towards solutions that harm their long-term health. And above all, it forces youngsters to take alternative paths to the top.

Germany seems to be one of these destinations that is increasingly attractive to those still learning the game. It’s been reported that Brewster is attracting heavy interest from Borussia Mönchengladbach and could follow the footsteps of Jadon Sancho, Ademola Lookman and Reece Oxford in seeking his fortune abroad.

In an ideal world, those players would be given the minutes the need at their home club. But when you can spend £30 million bringing in someone from Serie A or La Liga or the Bundesliga, why would you wait three years and take a long term bet? At some sides, doing that is tantamount to signing your own death warrant.

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp is one of the good guys out there. He does offer youth a chance, but looking at the current squad it’s still tricky to find a space for someone like Brewster.

Klopp’s assembled a star studded lineup and with Dominic Solanke and Danny Ings also in the first team, competition for places is fierce. Harry Wilson has just had an excellent loan spell with Hull City, while Ben Woodburn needs games next season.

The Reds are also a victim of their own success in this way, but more chances still need to be given to the up-and-comers.
