Liverpool have made a transfer bid for Croatia’s World Cup star defender Domagoj Vida.

Besiktas want at least £20 million for the man, but the Reds have opened negotiations at £13 million – wrote the Daily Star. They got their information from a journalist in Turkey, who took to social media to share the update.

Everton are also in the hunt to sign Vida, said the newspaper, who has seen 300 minutes of action at this summer’s World Cup.

Should the defender move to England, it would mark a massive return on investment for his club. Besiktas picked up the Croatian on a free transfer in January after his contract with Dynamo Kiev expired. The 29-year-old has also previously played for Bayer Leverkusen and Dinamo Zagreb.

With 62 international caps to his name, Vida is experienced in that field but lacks much action across the top five European leagues. During his time in Germany, the Osijek born man played just nine games.

However, Vida does have European experienced and has played 29 times in the Europa League as well as 24 times in the Champions League.

But he could add some more World Cup experience to that tally if Croatia can beat Russia in their quarter-final. The last time the nation reached the semi-final was in France ’98, but Vida thinks they can go two better than that.

This has been billed as their golden generation, and certainly the crop spearheaded by Luka Modric are incredibly talented.

In terms of the transfer, this one seems to have been a bit of a curveball. We’ve seen with the deal for Ragnar Klavan that Klopp will sign older players if the deal is right – but a big money offering for someone with a limit time left at the top of his game should be treated with suspicion.

If Everton are desperate to blow a decent chunk of change for a defender with limit top league experience and a looming expiry date then Liverpool should be happy to let them.
