Liverpool fans are pumped about the prospects of Harry Wilson in the first team this season after his first half brace against Chester in the opening pre-season fixture.

The pre-season is the time for hope, optimism and imagining a great season ahead. Liverpool fans are channeling a lot of that positive energy into the prospects of one young forward: Harry Wilson.

The Welsh international impressed in the first half of Liverpool’s opening pre-season game against Chester FC yesterday. He bagged two goals to kick off the comfortable 7-0 win.

Wilson has been the cause of much excitement in 2018. He was sent out on loan to Hull in January to gain first team experience after 18 months of impressing in the Liverpool reserves. Jurgen Klopp was keen to see how he would adapt to competitive professional football.

The loan was a resounding success. He scored seven goals and had three assists in just 11 starts for the Tigers. He also won a couple of penalties. That contribution was crucial to Hull City staying up in the Championship.

His incredible form at that level gave many Liverpool fans the hope that he would be able to contribute in the first team for the 2018/19 season. Yesterday’s performance only cemented those opinions:

His composure in front of goal is excellent. He never looks phased or out of his depth. There is a knack and an instinct to being a prolific goal scorer. We can see that Mohamed Salah has that in abundance and it looks like Wilson has many of those same qualities.

Liverpool are currently lacking many options to replace or rotate with Sadio Mane and Salah on the wings. Harry Wilson has shown in every opportunity so far that he can get goals.

While I would still like to see Liverpool add another attacker or two this season – particularly to cover for Roberto Firmino – I am also hoping that Wilson can get good minutes this year to see if he can make that final leap to top-level football.
