Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk lays into one of his defensive teammates on Sunday against West Ham and the fans love the passion!

There is no question who the leader of the Liverpool defense is. From the moment he stepped on to the pitch at Anfield for the first time Virgil van DIjk has marshaled the back four. His leadership and organization have been crucial in improving a once fragile unit.

This season has continued with van Dijk in that role but one moment from Sunday’s 4-0 victory over West Ham in the Premier League has fans excited on social media.

During the second half, as the Reds were protecting their lead, van Dijk reams out one of his defensive colleagues. After West Ham manage to whip in a dangerous ball from the wing van Dijk turns to Andy Robertson and screams “Stop the f*cking cross!”.

There is much praise in the media for how van Dijk is playing but he is also expecting the defense to have the highest standards. And he is not afraid to call out his teammates to make sure they have those standards too.

Liverpool have been missing a vocal leader at the back since Jamie Carragher retired in 2013. Even when our other center backs have been in good form (there have been spells) none of them would take command of the unit in the way the Dutchman has done since his arrival.

Fortunately Andy Robertson is made of stern stuff and will not be knocked by his center back giving him tough love.

There remains those fans who think he should be the captain of the club. If the job was suddenly up for grabs I imagine he would be front of the line. But it isn’t. We have a captain in Jordan Henderson. A very good one. A captain the manager loves. That is not changing until Henderson leaves the club.
