Liverpool midfielder James Milner has chimed in on the goal that won Mohamed Salah his Puskas.
Salah scooped the award with his strike against Everton, and Milner piped up on Twitter to congratulate the Egyptian for winning with his ‘seventh best’ effort last season.
Plenty of football fans around the globe have questioned this year’s Puskas as they claimed Salah’s wasn’t anywhere near the best effort from the season past.
We won’t know whether or not Milner actually agrees with them or is just being cheeky for the sake of being cheeky, but his tweet echos the sentiment bouncing around social media in the hours following the announcement.
Salah seems to be the only footballer around who is able to mobilize a global army of loyal followers who flood online voting platforms and essentially guarantee the star a win whenever a poll like that is brought to the masses.
The former Chelsea and Roma man did have an incredible 2017/2018 and certainly deserves as much recognition as possible – but did the Puskas go to the wrong Salah goal? Certainly you’d have a case to suggest his strike against Tottenham Hotspur was better.
He’s started off this campaign in a slightly subdued manner and definitely hasn’t looked himself at times. But three goals and an assist in six Premier League goals isn’t a bad return by anyone’s standards and his performance against Southampton was encouraging.
Liverpool do have more strength in depth this campaign and Xherdan Shaqiri should help take some weight off the shoulders of Sadio Mane and Salah. Of course you want the Egyptian firing on all cylinders for the whole season, but that does risk burnout.
But for now, just bask in the glow of the forward picking up another award – and one so prestigious as the Puskas. Have a look at the video above, relax and savour the moment.
