Liverpool beat Manchester City on Sunday and one of the most urgent questions is this: what the hell is going on with Dejan Lovren? Find your answers here.

This is a man who looked down and out a few months ago. Joe Gomez was the next big thing, Joel Matip was the next next big thing and Lovren was the unwanted man. He’d become a synonym for all sorts of unpleasant situations.

There must be all sorts of weird things in the water at Melwood because this isn’t the first complete turnaround we’ve seen from Liverpool players.

Degs has played pretty well since he returned to first team action, slowly at first with the MK Dons performance and then in a rush after Matip was ruled out until late November and Gomez fell down the pecking order.

Now he’s playing alongside Virgil van Dijk and keeping Sergio Aguero quiet while Raheem Sterling couldn’t get any joy against a central defensive partnership that included a former fourth choice man.

At the start of the season there would have been few tears shed if Dejan Lovren left for new pastures. AC Milan were interested in doing a deal, while a season of Carabao and FA Cup games was on the horizon.

But since the Croatian has come back into the side he’s look rejuvenated, he’s looked determined and Jurgen Klopp has a proper decision to make when Matip comes back to full fitness. Gomez must be walking around in a daze as his stock has fallen quicker than Beetamax.

The strength in depth that Liverpool have across the four center-backs has come to prominence now and Klopp must be thanking his lucky stars that he has players of the quality of van Dijk, Matip, Lovren and Gomez.

Man City are in the middle of their own injury crisis and have been forced to play Fernandinho at the back. We’re truly treated on Anfield.
