Liverpool can suffocate play

After a brutal start where frantic counter-attack was met by frantic counter-attack, Liverpool started to get a grip and managed to exert their control over the game. Their possession numbers went up and by the last five or 10 minutes of the half the Foxes barely even touched the ball, it was like a training exercise.

At one point, the Foxes must have strung together 20 passes and barely even escaped outside their own box. The home fans knew they were being strangled, too, and the dissenting noise grew and grew into howls of frustration.

We haven’t seen the Reds take such control of a game for a long time and it completely nullified how Rodgers wanted his side to play their football. Jamie Vardy barely had a sniff, James Maddison was forced to do all sorts of things he didn’t want to and Harvey Barnes was anonymous.

It was the perfect example of how possession football can help you win games with ease. Liverpool won 4-0 here but it could easily have been more as Sadio Mane, Mohamed Salah and Firmino all missed good chances before the second goal. This game was a joy to watch and will give the team so much confidence going into the game on Saturday.
