Lazar Markovic

To: Fulham
Fee: Free

Shortly after his free transfer, Fulham manager Claudio Ranieri found out that his new man wasn’t necessarily any good at football. You know, the thing he was presumably being brought on to do.

"“We know that he does a superb karaoke version of How The West Was Won And Where It Got Us by R.E.M. We know that he’s a generous and patient lover. “But when it comes to football, nobody’s really sure if he’s any good at that.” -Claudio Ranieri"

He didn’t last long with Fulham. He played in a single game for the Cottagers. He came on in the 46th minute for Ryan Sessegnon in a 3-1 loss to West Ham on February 22.

In his 45-minute cameo, Markovic committed one foul and had one interception. That’s it on his time with Fulham. With the season over and Fulham relegated to the Championship, Markovic’s contract wasn’t renewed.

He floated around as a free agent until his former club Partizan Belgrade brought him back in last September. Markovic has come full circle from leaving Belgrade as a teenager and now returning after a few years around Europe.

Liverpool was spot on to let Markovic go. Maybe they could have tried to extract a few million to ease the £20 million Brendan Rodgers paid out to Benefica back in 2014. But then again, they’d make up that £20 million from the next guy.
