Tottenham Hotspur have signed Gedson Fernandes from Benfica, but what could be mean for Liverpool?

Spurs have signed the Portuguese youngster on an 18-month loan deal with an option to buy, said the BBC, and in doing so they have secured the services of a player who once had the highest release clause in Portuguese history inserted into his contract.

Jose Mourinho will get an all-rounder who can compliment the way he wants to pair up his engine room, but the deal could have positive ramifications for a title-chasing Liverpool.

For a start, it might endanger the future of Harry Winks even further. Winks is not the type of midfielder Mourinho likes to build his teams on – and despite being an Academy lad, you can see a future in which he is moved on after stagnating through lack of opportunity.

He’s only started two of the last seven games and it looks like those predictions we all made at the start of Mou’s tenure are about to come true. This means Liverpool should make a move for Winks in the summer as James Milner ages and Klopp looks to inject some more quality into the midfield.

But it could also help the Reds in other ways. If Gedson Fernandes hits the ground running and helps lift Tottenham out of their malaise, it could result in a win against Manchester City – which would let Liverpool move even further away from the chasing pack.

He has been out of favour with Benfica but there is a player with real potential there, he’s someone who can give Tottenham something that are seriously lacking and who can cause problems for the opposition.
