Liverpool should exploit the inevitable fallout from Jose Mourinho’s appointment at Tottenham Hotspur to sign one important player.

It’s not Son Heung-min, although you’d take him in a heartbeat. And it’s not Dele Alli, because Mou loves a good no. 10, and it’s not Harry Kane, because all the Portuguese’s teams are focused on a ‘proper’ striker.

The man Liverpool should move for, well, it’s…… Harry Winks.

Think about it and it makes sense. James Milner is on his final few years at the club and there has been suspicious silence about a new deal for the midfielder. Marko Grujic probably isn’t going to make the cut and you can imagine him being sold for a healthy amount. Herbie Kane isn’t good enough.

Mourinho doesn’t really like deep lying midfielders either, but Jurgen Klopp loves them. Klopp loves them so much that he’s even converted Georginio Wijnaldum, who can’t stop scoring for the Netherlands, into one.

If Liverpool get the chance to sign a young but Premier League experienced England international for not that much, they should seriously consider it. Yes, the squad is full in that area and it’s certainly something that could scupper a deal, but if Milner moves on there could be a vacancy.

Adam Lallana looks like he could be on his last legs, and again, there would be another body down in an area of the field that’s vital to the cause.

Jordan Henderson and Harry Winks playing either side of Fabinho would add a range of passing to the side that would unlock doors for Sadio Mane, Roberto Firmino and Mohamed Salah. That would still leave Wijnaldum, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Naby Keita fighting for position on the field and that wouldn’t be ideal – but the question needs to be asked: Is Winks a better option than Gini?

dark. Next. Three options to replace injured Mohamed Salah

And if so, where would that leave his future?
