Give the glorious Jose Mourinho the keys to Liverpool after Tottenham executed a smash n grab and beat Manchester City 2-0 at home.

Hugo Lloris saved Ilkay Gundogan‘s penalty before Steven Bergwijn scored on his debut and Son Heung-Min hit the second to send the Reds 22 points clear of City at the top of the Premier League.

Not many people would have put money on Spurs coming away from that fixture with a win, but Mourinho has shown he can always be relied on to pull a rabbit out the hat and the old master did so on Sunday afternoon.

Despite Pep Guardiola‘s domination – they had 67% possession and 18 shots compared to Spurs’ three – they couldn’t find a way through and Oleksandr Zinchenko‘s red card changed the complexion of the game.

Jurgen Klopp will now have a glorious two weeks off before Liverpool go to Norwich on the 15th of February. The squad deserves their rest, even if there are those who would have benefited from playing against Shrewsbury in the FA Cup replay, and will come back eager to point more ground between them and the chasing pack.

After the agonies of last season, to be 22 points clear of City is something nobody would have thought possible. Liverpool are in serious contention of wrapping this up early and concentrating on the Champions League.

With only 15 goals conceded in 25 games, you can’t see the Canaries finding a way past the impregnable Alisson and his back four. And unlike the international break, there will be no concerns about players coming back with niggles and being forced to drop out the side.

Guardiola will be furious and Mourinho delighted. He’s now beaten the Spaniard six times – only Klopp has defeated the City boss more with eight – and has got the better of Pep with four different sides.
