Loads was hoped of Divock Origi after his performances last season, but this is why he’s Liverpool’s biggest disappointment in 2020.

At the start of 2018/2019, the speculation surrounding the Belgium wasn’t how he was going to fit into the Reds side, but whether he’d be sold and who to.

Wolves wanted Divock Origi at some point, but the player didn’t want to go.

As a result, Jurgen Klopp kept him around the club and it initially looked as if he’d be there to make up the numbers. But then something happened.

Vital goals kept on coming, culminating in the ridiculous winner in the historic 4-0 home defeat of Barcelona. Cult hero status was looming. A new five-year contract handed out.

There were dissenting voices, but nobody really agreed with them. But slowly, Divock Origi has failed to build on that chance Klopp handed him and has generally, by and large, been a disappointment.

Xherdan Shaqiri has pushed the Belgian close in this dubious category – but Origi claims it because of the heights he has fallen.

This season, Divock has been fairly anonymous when he’s been given the chance. Whether that’s from the left as a replacement for Sadio Mane, or centrally, the forward has failed to deliver what’s required of him.

Apart from the league game against Everton, in which he scored, Origi has just five goals from 36 appearances this season and 1,239 minutes. That’s a goal every four hours.

FOUR HOURS.

For a team of Liverpool’s stature, those are not good enough numbers for the back-up option and it highlights why Klopp needs to dip into the transfer market.

Next. Five Liverpool players you’d want to be quarantined with. dark

After eight goals last season, this was supposed to be the time Origi started to break through into the team properly and establish his reputation.

That hasn’t happened, and it wouldn’t surprise me if it never did.
