Liverpool to fight Chelsea for Roberto Firmino competition
Liverpool are due to fight Chelsea to sign a man who could come in as competition for Brazilian star Roberto Firmino.
After Divock Origi got panned by a Liverpool legend a few days ago, people have started to think about his future in the squad.
Could he go, could he stay? There’s no doubt things haven’t been as good as they were last season for the Belgian and more competition among forwards would help drive them forward.
Jurgen Klopp hasn’t been able to change things from the bench as much as he would have liked to, especially with Xherdan Shaqiri‘s continued injury problems.
Tuttomercatoweb have reported that Liverpool could fit Chelsea for a player who’ll be able to provide competition for Firmino, as well as a little bit of stardust to the first team squad.
Frank Lampard is fairly keen on bringing the man to Stamford Bridge and has made personal contact with the forward, said the Daily Mail, so Klopp might have to move fast if he wants to secure the deal.
Chelsea have already signed Hakim Ziyech but are looking at moving quickly to secure targets for next season.
But Liverpool might have the last laugh as they want Dries Mertens as well, who is coming to the end of his deal with Napoli.
The Belgian has scored 121 goals in 311 appearances for the Italian side but is seeing his influence waning and has hit the back of the net just six times in Serie A this season. For 2018/2019 he grabbed 16 as well as 10 assists.
Despite his advancing years, Dries Mertens could still provide good competition for Roberto Firmino and push the Brazilian to improve his game.
Although the Belgian is already 32-years-old and is coming into the last few years of his career. Age might play a factor here, and that could put Klopp off making a bid for the player.
