Liverpool fans aren’t impressed by the transfer rumour linking the club with a move for a £40 million player.
The Daily Mail wrote that Liverpool have been looking at the player, who is already 29-years-old, as a possible summer recruit. But they will face competition from Arsenal and Manchester United if they want to fight for his signature.
It’s news that’s gone down like a fart in an elevator to some sections of the fanbase, who think Jurgen Klopp should be aiming higher than someone who is nearly at the end of his best years.
They probably have a point with that. Surely Liverpool are big enough to be signing players who are in their peak and who will continue to be in their peak for some time? If we spend big, we should also be seeing the value in that.
Which is why Wissam Ben Yedder isn’t exactly setting pulses racing. The Monaco forward has scored 19 times in Ligue 1 this season after he moved back to France following a fairly successful time with Sevilla, but that’s not exciting.
The 8-time French international isn’t going to set the world alite and he’s not the type of all-round star we want to see compliment our starting forwards. Players like Jadon Sancho and Timo Werner get fans excited.
Some old bloke just isn’t going to cut the mustard.
And there’s no guarantee that we’ll see any return on investment for our £40 million either. Liverpool aren’t a club who spend big for the sake of it and it’s difficult to see how Wissam Ben Yedder fits into any master plan.
I’d rather see Takumi Minamino, Xherdan Shaqiri or Divock Origi kept around the squad and given more time than bring in an expensive import that may or may not flop.
As far as transfer rumours go, this one is pretty underwhelming and fans have every right to question it.
