Liverpool are the new Spurs with needless penny pinching

Liverpool are the new Tottenham Hotspur.

The last major player acquisition for Liverpool was Allison Becker, in the summer of 2018, who was signed after Loris Karius bolloxed two howlers in the Champions League final in Kiev.

Takumi Minamino was brought in on the cheap in January, but he’s a work in progress, and not a starting choice at present.

Let’s face reality here and now, and be honest with ourselves, Liverpool desperately need a world class center-back. They need a top class midfield creator and a competent backup for that position. They need a center-forward who can challenge Roberto Firmino for his starting job.

Without someone (another forward to challenge for his job) pushing Firmino to score more, he will just stay static and this just isn’t good enough anymore.

They need backups for Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah.

If Jurgen Klopp and the Liverpool transfer committee think they can tread water in the transfer market again this summer, then they are being extremely shortsighted. Tottenham did this same thing three seasons ago when Mauricio Pochettino was still at the helm.

And where are Spurs now, today? They sit on seventh in the table, struggling to find a Europa League birth. Having watched Chelsea (after coming off a two season transfer ban) pass them by, and Manchester United just keeps up the spending.

Now United are finally reaping benefits and rewards for their spending. The purchase of Bruno Fernandes has proven the spark which has Ole Gunnar Solskjær side playing decent football once again. Even a beleaguered Arsenal side has passed Tottenham by.

Manchester City spent €140m. last summer, and if reports coming from the club, after their appeal was won this week in Switzerland, are true, they are set to spend another €150m this transfer window.

Next. Liverpool to extend contract then sell in summer. dark

The vultures are circling. Now is not the time to rest on Liverpool laurels.
