PSG want Liverpool star Joel Matip.

That news has sparked a furious response on social media by Liverpool fans who fully value the idea of the former Cameron international in the squad next season.

Kick 442 football writer Angu Lesley reported that PSG want to sign Joel Matip as a replacement for their ageing defender Thiago Silva.

But one scroll through Twitter shows that fans do not like this idea one bit. His all-round ability, attitude and experience were often quoted as reasons why the club shouldn’t sell, while there’s been a few choice words aimed at the Ligue 1 club for their interest.

Silva and Edinson Cavani have both left the club following the expiration of their contracts, said AS. The French club will now be on the hunt to replace the experience and quality of both their former stars and have settled their gave upon Liverpool.

Matip have proven himself to be one of the best defenders in the Premier League since he signed from Schalke on a free transfer. The only thing holding the 28-year-old back is his unfortunate injury record.

He’s missed an over 60 matches over the course of eight knocks since 2016. His most serious was a knee injury that accounted for 20 of those, although a toe problem kept him out of all but one game since the restart.

Jurgen Klopp would be highly reluctant to let Matip leave now, especially after selling Dejan Lovren to Zenit St. Petersberg. Kick 442 make no mention of the price PSG would be willing to pay for the defender, but an eyebrow-raising amount might tempt the Anfield money men.

That would present them with a problem though. Sporting director Michael Edwards would be tasked with finding two new defenders, convince them to start as third and fourth choice options and ensure they acclimatised to this side fast enough so they had a positive impact when called upon.

Liverpool would be leaving themselves with a lot of legwork if they sold Joel Matip, no matter how attractive the package might be.
