Liverpool target Jamal Lewis has been backed to join the club.
Evening Standard journalist Alex Young wrote that Northern Ireland manager Ian Baraclough believes his charge can be a Merseyside success.
Despite suffering relegation from the Premier League, the 22-year-old has impressed and looks to be the perfect man to play understudy to Andy Robertson.
Even though Lewis wouldn’t be getting as the same minutes with Liverpool as he would elsewhere, the chance to work under Jurgen Klopp and with a squad who’s just won the Champions League and Premier League shouldn’t be turned down – said Baraclough.
The Northern Ireland gaffer thinks the defender should put pen to paper as quickly as possible.
"He said: “As a player, I’d be saying ‘Where’s the contract, I want to sign it’. Why wouldn’t you want to go to the European champions, the Premier League champions and the World Club champions?”"
Jamal Lewis has been extensively linked with a move to Liverpool. Sporting director Michael Edwards offered £10 million for the left-back, but Norwich City are holding out for double that amount.
The Telegraph’s Chris Bascombe wrote that City want £20 million for their star player, and negotiations are ongoing between the Reds and the Canaries.
This position is one of the biggest holes in the squad and it’s an issue that needs to be addressed. James Milner has played at left-back before, but his advancing age means that Liverpool lose some attacking output whenever he takes the reigns from Robbo.
Neco Williams’ arrival on the scene makes bringing in a right-back fairly redundant, which is why we’re seeing more transfer rumours for central defenders and left-backs.
Dejan Lovren’s departure opens up a rare place in the squad for another defender. Youngsters Sepp van den Berg and Ki-Jana Hoever probably aren’t ready to step up to the Premier League and Jurgen Klopp will need to look towards the market.
Will we see Lewis brought in? There’s been a lot of noise surrounding this deal – most of it imploring the youngster to make the most of Liverpool’s interest.
