Liverpool want David Brooks as an Adam Lallana replacement.
Jack Stapelhurst, the Daily Star’s assistant sports editor, wrote that Liverpool are on the hunt for David Brooks.
According to Stapelhurst, the Bournemouth man would be brought in as a direct replacement for Adam Lallana and Xhedan Shaqiri as Jurgen Klopp wants someone else in the squad to add some width.
However, he would cost up to £35 million.
Everton, Tottenham and West Ham all want the player as well, which could drive up the price. The Cherries have shown they won’t be bullied after they managed to recoup £40 million for Nathan Ake.
Brooks would come in as someone who can provide another option when Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah aren’t firing, but the Jamal Lewis saga has shown us that Liverpool aren’t too happy to pay top money for a reserve player.
Sporting director Michael Edwards refused to buckle as Norwich City demanded £20 million for their left-back. After seeing this, Edwards quickly switched targets and now Kostas Tsimikas looks set to join the Reds for £11.75 million.
Brooks was a revelation during his first season with Bournemouth, but 2019/2020 was a disaster for him as injury restricted him to just nine appearances.
After seven goals and five assists in 35 games, big things were expected from the former Sheffield United man. After just getting started with his top flight journey, the Welsh international won’t want to take another step back into the Championship.
Ultimately, this fee looks to be a little high. If Liverpool are cutting short interest in Lewis because they won’t go past a certain fee, or if Edwards feels a move for Thiago Alcantara doesn’t represent value for money at £27 million, than buying Brooks for £35 million probably isn’t going to happen.
Bringing in experienced cover for Lallana or Shaqiri is a good plan, but not at that price.
