Thiago Alcantara has been backed to instantly improve Liverpool.

The Spanish midfielder has been the subject of continued transfer speculation, and could be sold for a cut-price fee by Bayern Munich.

Simon Hughes, a journalist who works for The Athletic, was talking on The Red Agenda podcast and he through his full weight behind getting Thiago Alcantara. Listen at around the 24 minute mark.

Factors such as his age and the price for the former Barcelona star have been mentioned as reasons why Liverpool should stay clear, but Hughes completely disagrees with them all.

"He said: “If Liverpool can get him it’ll be incredible… it’s a great signing, you can see him fitting into the Liverpool team straight away.”"

Jurgen Klopp does have excellent strength in depth in midfield positions where stars like Gini Wijnaldum, Fabinho, Naby Keita, Jordan Henderson and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain are scrapping for three positions.

Thiago would only serve to edge one of those out.

Hughes, the author of books on Liverpool such as Men in White Suits, reckons that Klopp and sporting director Michael Edwards should jump on the chance on signing the Munich man.

There has been some good news on the transfers front. Kostas Tsimikas has joined from Greek Super League side Olympiacos. That indicates that there is some money floating around, especially with the sale of Dejan Lovren and the release of Nathaniel Clyne and Adam Lallana.

"This is something that Hughes mentioned, as he said: “He’s the creative hub in one of the best teams in the world.“If Liverpool can afford to sign a left-back, there must be a little bit of money somewhere for this world class player.”"

Munich are still involved in the Champions League, and that could prevent any deals being done between now and the eventual end of their European campaign.

Thiago has remained an important player throughout this saga, even though he’s committed to leaving the Bavarian side between now and the end of his contract next season.

He was a vital part of the side who brushed aside Chelsea to advance to the next round of the competition as he displayed all the attributes and abilities that make the Spaniard such a great player.

Will this deal go through? James Milner signed for Liverpool when he was 29 – the same age Thiago is now – so there is some precedent there.

Tackles like Gomez, plays like van Dijk - the free agent Liverpool must sign. dark. Next

It looks like we’ll have to wait until Munich exit the Champions League.
