Liverpool have ruined Barcelona star Sergio Busquets.

Tweeting before a football match is pretty common, and sometimes it comes back to bite players in the arse. But rarely has it completely ruined them.

It appears to have put the Barca midfielder right off his social media game.

One day before the Catalan giants were due to take on Liverpool, Sergio Busquets tweeted a fairly bland pre-game statement. He simply said his team was ready.

ESPN discovered that it’s also the last time he’s taken to Twitter. That was over a year ago.

Liverpool had to win that game 4-0 to progress to the next stage of the Champions League. It seemed nearly impossible, but Anfield doesn’t do impossible.

On that mad, crazy, mental night, Anfield delivered.

With an atmosphere that carried the team to victory (along with some sneaky corners), Divock Origi and Gini Wijnaldum scored twice to see the match out 4-0.

To be fair to Busquets, it must have been some trauma to play through. Barcelona took a formidable side to Merseyside, with Lionel Messi coming off the back of a masterclass performance.

There was also Luis Suarez, Philippe Coutinho, Gerard Pique, Ivan Rakitic. This was a solid team.

But they wilted badly, and even though Jurgen Klopp was robbed of Mohamed Salah and Roberto Firmino – Wijnaldum played as a false nine – it didn’t matter.

Xherdan Shaqiri even started this game! Daniel Sturridge made a substitute appearance!

If you played this match another 10 times it’s unlikely Liverpool would win 4-0, and that’s what makes it taste even sweeter. And to be fair, if it was any result that would make you quit social media, it may as well be that one.

So here’s to Busquets – the man the Reds traumatised so badly that he even had to quit Twitter after one innocuous moment.
