Former Liverpool defender Dejan Lovren has been slammed.

The Croatian did an interview in Russia in which he made one very surprising claim about a decision he made that could have had serious ramifications for Liverpool and the Premier League.

Talking to Vladimir Kolos, Dejan Lovren said that he travelled to Anfield, broke his secure bubble and joined in with celebrations after the Premier League win was confirmed.

"He said: “They told us, ‘don’t even go to the stadium, we cannot keep you safe’. The party was already over and I said to myself I will take the car and I go to Anfield, just to experience this.“I put the mask on, and my God, I just wanted to feel this emotion because we didn’t have a good celebration in the stadium because it was empty.“I put my mask down to see my phone, and in this second like four of them saw me.”"

Liverpool fans have taken to Twitter to call him out for that decision, which has been branded as ‘stupid’ and ‘dangerous’.

Lovren could have easily picked up COVID-19 among the throng of people who descended upon the stadium to celebrate the win, passed it on to the rest of the squad and then infected someone from another top flight side.

One moment of madness could have caused serious ramifications for the club but also for the whole league and the city.

Those criticising him are absolutely right to do so, and it’s incredible that Lovren thought he could talk about this openly. He even mentions that Adrian knew about this stunt, although the Spaniard declined Lovren’s invitation to go with him.

He talks about wearing a mask like that was going to be adequate protection, but then mentions how he took his mask away from his face in order to check his phone – which then put Lovren at an increased risk of infection and eliminated any benefits wearing the mask gave him.

The Croatian is now in Russia playing for Zenit St. Petersburg and has enjoyed a successful start to life there, winning the Russian Super Cup and scoring in their win against Rostov.

Not matter how far away from Liverpool he is, I wouldn’t put it past Jurgen Klopp to hunt him down and teach him the error of his ways.
