Revealed: Thiago to Liverpool won’t happen
Thiago to Liverpool won’t happen.
By now we’ve come to realise that FSG aren’t in the mood to buy without selling first, which makes a degree of sense given the current financial climate.
Where it gets annoying is watching other sides splash the cash like there’s no tomorrow. Leeds United, Everton, Manchester United and Manchester City have all made significant outlays this summer transfer window.
Thiago is available for a reasonable sum, but that doesn’t appear to be enough. FSG want one out the door first, and the player could be Gini Wijnaldum.
But that’s where things get tricky, writes Mark Ogden for ESPN. We’ve heard various reports on what’s going on with Wijnaldum and perceived wisdom is that Barcelona do want to sign the Dutchman.
His contract expires at the end of this season, which would normally give teams cause to cash in while they still can; it’s what Bayern Munich want to do with Thiago.
Jurgen Klopp is different. He doesn’t mind extracting another campaign from players and allowing them to leave for nothing. Klopp set his precedent with Emre Can and confirmed it with Daniel Sturridge, Alberto Moreno, Adam Lallana and Nathaniel Clyne.
Liverpool want Wijnaldum to stay, writes Ogden, and the player isn’t forcing through a move to Barcelona right now. That unbalances the transfer system FSG have put in place, and means it’s unlikely a move for Thiago will happen right now.
If Klopp ultimately decides he doesn’t want to lose Wijnaldum, we won’t see Thiago move to Liverpool at all. His contract is also up next season, but he’ll be 30 then and that’ll make a move even less attractive.
Gini is a major spanner in the works of this deal, and it doesn’t look like anyone at the club are prepared to take him out.
