Liverpool player ratings: Midfielders

. . . FABINHO. 4

The Brazilian’s telescopic legs were seriously out of touch today – and even when he dropped into central defence he was shaky.

Fabinho needs to start there next time though as Gomez was just – well – woeful. Whether he will or not will depend on the makeup of the squad and whether Thiago is fit enough to play.

After testing positive for COVID-19, it could be a while until the new signing is up to speed and that might force Klopp’s hand.

. . . GINI WIJNALDUM. 5.5

Albeit he looked positive whilst on the ball, Gini Wijnaldum was another victim of Villa’s utter domination of the midfield.

He isn’t the scapegoat for today, but needs to improve when the Derby comes around. How can this man and this group of three players get dominated to easily? This is one of the most perplexing parts of the game.

Surely, individuals make errors but for a whole group of players to fail to suddenly and so completely is the real mystery.

5. . . . NABY KEITA

I love Naby Keita. And I mean that sincerely. Tonight was the first time he’d started five consecutive matches. But he won’t be in against Everton injury permitting.

He was bullied by Villa’s midfield triad. His worst performance in a Liverpool shirt.
