Liverpool player ratings: Defenders

Trent Alexander-Arnold (8/10) The most experienced of all the Academy players who finished the game, Alexander-Arnold set up the first goal, showed off his range of passing and crossing and generally had the better of Johan Mojica.

Joe Gomez (8/10) Another superb Champions League outing for Gomez, who was kept busy in the first half. The defender showed off his passing range with an excellent ball to Jota for his second goal, and stepped up into midfield when required. An excellent performance.

Rhys Williams (8/10) Wow. What a full debut from Williams, who is starting to look like another find from the Academy. This game was no walk in the park, at least on paper, but Williams showed nerves of steel and fighter-pilot levels of concentration.

I can’t wait to see more of this young man moving forward.

Andy Robertson (8/10) Robertson did lots of Robertson things. He ran hard, ran often and carried the ball forwards as well as he stopped it coming back in the other direction. He was subbed off to give Kostas Tsimikas some minutes, and should be pleased of his contribution.
