Liverpool could sign a Bundesliga star for just £18 million.

We’re well used to sporting director Michael Edwards pulling a rabbit out the hat here and there. The Reds snapped up Takumi Minamino when Edwards became aware of a rock-bottom release clause in his contract.

Diogo Jota was scouted and signed for a fee that was laughed at, but Edwards’ judgement has proven to be sound after a tremendous run of form that saw the Portuguese international score seven goals in 10 games.

Thiago swapped Munich for Merseyside after Liverpool convinced him to turn down the Bavarian’s latest contract offer, and they could be at it again with another Bundesliga star.

German publication BILD has reported that the Reds have got their eye on another cut-price deal as the scouting department has been working overtime since the summer transfer window closed in October.

Ever since Virgil van Dijk was poleaxed by Jordan Pickford in the Merseyside derby, we’ve been looking out for someone who could replace the Dutchman. Rhys Williams and Nat Phillips have done well during their limit time on the pitch, but they aren’t the answer.

It’s unlikely that Phillips will use van Dijk’s injury to turbocharge his Liverpool career, while Williams has got youth on his side and could still become a good squad player. But he’s not the type of player we need now.

Joel Matip’s horrible injury record means Jurgen Klopp could turn to the transfer market in January, and Ozan Kabak could be the player he turns to.

Kabak currently plays for Schalke but they’re in the midst of some horrible financial trouble and that may led to them selling their Turkish star for just £18 million, say BILD.

If we picked up the 20-year-old for that price it would be another example of the excellent financial planning that Edwards undertakes, and the scouting departments ability to pick up bargains from across Europe.
