Liverpool have been dealt a shattering transfer rejection.

In a week where there’s been plenty of bad news, the Reds will have to learn how to cope with some more. Trent Alexander-Arnold and Joe Gomez have been added to Jurgen Klopp’s butcher’s bill, but that’s not it.

There’s been some speculation about what the German will do next. Will he turn to the transfer market, or will there be increased opportunities for Rhys Williams and Nat Phillips?

Until now, Klopp has always preferred to seek in-house solutions. But with the January transfer window rapidly approaching, the manager could use a sticking plaster approach before spending money to address our squad imbalances.

Virgil van Dijk is going to be out for the rest of the season and Joe Gomez could follow him. Details on the England international are hard to come by, but Sky Sports have called Gomez’s injury ‘potentially serious’ while Three Lions’ gaffer Gareth Southgate revealed the centre-back was in a lot of pain.

"“What was upsetting was to see he was in a fair bit of pain, and the fact there was nobody around him when the injury happened.”"

Liverpool have got an excellent reputation in the transfer market. They often find value before their competitors realise there’s value to be had – look at the move to sign Takumi Minamino, for example.

Thiago was signed on this basis, and Diogo Jota was brought over from Wolves in a structured deal that made him way more affordable than Timo Werner, despite the similarities in the overall fee the Reds will pay for the Portuguese international.

David Alaba could have been another transformative signing made on the cheap. The Austrian won’t be signing a new contract with Bayern Munich, and with a deal that expires at the end of the season, would have been available for a reduced price in January.

However, Bundesliga reporter Chris Williams has said on Twitter that Munich will not be letting the versatile and experienced star leave in the winter window.

Signing a man like Alaba would have helped Liverpool solve many of their problems. He can play as a central defender, would bring crucial experience and quality to the side and is a versatile operator.

In light of Gomez’s injury, he could have provided an important moral boost and is a man who doesn’t often get injured. For a squad who are struggling to cobble together a back four, that matters.
