Liverpool midfielder Gini Wijnaldum has sent fans into a spin.

The Dutchman midfielder was a key part of Liverpool’s beautiful 7-0 victory over Crystal Palace at the weekend. He sent out a customary tweet after the result, which sent some supporters a little loopy.

We’re well versed in the contract stand-off that’s following Wijnaldum around like a bad smell, and performances like the ones he’s been putting off aren’t helping us come to terms with a Gini-less future.

Manager Jurgen Klopp loves the ex-Newcastle United star, we all love him, he plays more minutes than anymore else (well, nearly. He’s 123 minutes behind Andy Robertson, who has played the most).

This is why, when Wijnaldum posts a tweet that simply says ‘Team’, you’re going to have loads of fans who are crying out for the Dutchman to commit to the team and extend his stay at Anfield.

That’s what the majority of replies were asking of the 30-year-old, who has been with Liverpool for nearly five years.

I don’t know what the sticking point in negotiations is, but a simple guess would be money. When Gini signed his initial deal, Klopp had just come to the club but the side was nowhere near the levels they are now.

Since Wijnaldum arrived on Merseyside, he’s seen Sadio Mane, Mohamed Salah, Virgil van Dijk and Alisson Becker pick up big pay packets while his stayed the same. It’s unfortunate timing for Wijnaldum, who must be one of the worst rewarded senior players in the squad.

Perhaps Liverpool is uncomfortable at the thought of offering a 30-year-old a big contract when he’s coming towards the end of his time in the sun and maybe that’s why Wijnaldum is going to see if the grass is greener in Europe.

But as we can see, the fans don’t care about that. They just want Wijnaldum to stay.
