Liverpool wants to start contract talks with two massive stars.
Rousing The Kop listened to Fabrizio Romano’s paywalled podcast, and heard that the Reds are keen to extend the stays of Fabinho and Virgil van Dijk.
These two men have been a key part of the side that steamrolled the Premier League, won the Champions League and has been unbeatable at home.
Crucially, they are on the original contracts that took them to Liverpool from Monaco and Southampton. Sporting director Michael Edwards wants to change that.
Liverpool has been keen to tie down their elite performers to good deals, and we’ve regularly been fed news of contract extensions signed by our best players.
Van Dijk (29) and Fabinho (27) are in the peak of their career, and if they sign these new contracts they’ll be committing the rest of their elite years to Merseyside.
Liverpool must be feeling fairly optimistic about van Dijk’s injury rehabilitation. An ACL injury has ruined careers before, and by offering the centre-back a new bumper contract, they must feel secure that he’ll recover from his rehab and come back as the same player.
Fabinho has helped Klopp build the type of midfield that can push high up the field, shut down opposition attacks and facilitate Andy Robertson and Trent Alexander-Arnold moving up the field.
He can be the bedrock of this side for the next four years and making sure he is can help Liverpool as they move through a transition period over the next two seasons.
The entire front three are closing in on 30 and will need to be phased out over the next 24 months, but keeping some consistency in the squad will be key.
