According to recent reports from the Spanish outlet AS, Liverpool FC has moved in with an offer for Spanish giant Atletico Madrid’s bench-warming forward.
The player in question is Atletico’s Brazilian striker, Matheus Cunha.
Bought in the last summer transfer window for a reported fee of 25 million pounds from German outfit, Hertha Berlin, the Brazilian has been reduced to a bench player for the Spanish outfit.
The 22-year-old had an excellent Olympics for Brazil. In five games, he directly contributed to 4 goals. He scored 3 of them and assisted one.
However, he has played only 479 minutes in the league this season for Atletico Madrid. In those 479 minutes, Cunha has scored 4 times and assisted twice.
Cunha is a striker acquainted with a high pressing system and will fit right into Klopp’s system. The youngster averages 22.85 pressures per 90 and successfully completes 5.74 on average per 90. That’s one of the highest in Europe. He is also a master dribbler. He completes 2.14 dribbles per 90 and dribbles past 2.32 players on average per 90. (stats taken from Fbref)
The report suggests that Liverpool is trying to get the Brazilian to the Anfield as another backup option to their attacking three. However, Cunha will provide some much-needed quality cover and give competition to Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino, whose performances have dipped in the recent past.
Klopp likes the striker and has persuaded Micheal Edwards to submit a bid. However, according to the report, Atletico is not ready to offload the striker just yet.
Liverpool seems to be very active in the last few days of this winter transfer window. Not only have they been linked with a range of players from Raphinha, Moussa Diaby, Kalvin Phillips, Jarrod Bowen, and Paulo Dybala.
The Reds have also completed the signing of Luis Diaz and are very close to signing Fulham teenager Fabio Carvalho.
Do you think Cunha will be a good option for Liverpool?
