5 players who will have impressed Andoni Iraola during Liverpool's win over Wrexham

Liverpool were victorious in their match last night against Wrexham thanks to a deflected goal from Rio Ngumoha.

The Reds debuted their new away kit against the Welsh side as they played their second game of the preseason tour in the United States, this time in New York.

With many of the starting 11 still on holiday, or starting their preseason in Liverpool, the youngsters have had the chance to impress new head coach Andoni Iraola ahead of the 2026/27 season.

And it's an opportunity many are taking, so these were our standout performers against Rob Mac's and Ryan Reynold's Wrexham:

5 - Dominik Szoboszlai

The Hungarian has stepped up again it seems this season, and since signing his new deal he has relished in almost becoming a mentor for a lot of the younger players in the squad.

After scoring a wonderful volley against Sunderland, he put in another performance worthy of the captain's armband.

He assisted Ngumoha's goal (although it did take a big deflection), created two chances, had a 96% pass accuracy (64/67), made six passes into the final third and had a shot on target.

Liverpool's number eight also picked up the ball on the edge of the box in the 30th minute, held off a few challenges and released Lewis Koumas who, after falling over, appealed for a penalty but it wasn't forthcoming.

Szoboszlai is firmly in the running to fill in the open vice captain spot, and his performances are the perfect way to show why.

4 - Giorgi Mamardashvili

Mamardashvili had a tough start to his time at Liverpool. His defenders seemed to forget he was left footed, the squad was in disarray and he was still a new player at the club.

The only way is up though - and with Alisson potentially off next summer, this may be a big season for the Georgian.

His performance against Wrexham will give him a lot of confidence. Keeping a clean sheet is always a morale booster, and alongside that he made several good saves throughout the match.

Liverpool's number 25 has also improved his distribution massively in a short space of time. In the 26th minute he fizzed a driven pass right through the heart of midfield into Koumas' feet to get Liverpool from back to front in a flash.

There's certainly more to come from Liverpool's back-up goalkeeper and still only 25 years old means there's plenty of time to fill his massive potential

3 - Luke Chambers

Chambers is a player that not many Liverpool fans will even be aware of.

He has been at the club since he was six years-old, but since turning 19 has spent his career away from the club, on loan at Kilmarnock, Wigan and Charlton.

The young left-back, who played at centre-back last night, was calm and composed when thrown in the deep-end against Wrexham.

Liverpool's number 44 performed well with his defensive partner Ifeanyi Ndukwe, made key interceptions, had five recoveries and won a third of his ground duels.

While the 22-year-old is likely to go on loan, with QPR reportedly targeting him, his performance last night did no harm in showing his potential.

2 - Ifeanyi Ndukwe

Liverpool's new 18-year-old Austrian was signed in January from Austria Wien £2.6 million, but officially joined this summer.

He was a part of the Austria team that came second in the 2025 U-17 World Cup, losing to Portugal in the final.

The 6'6" Austrian put in a stellar performance, playing the full 90 minutes with a 90% pass accuracy, 81 completed passes, blocking two shots and making three ball recoveries.

It's unfortunate that due to visa rules Ndukwe will have to be sent on loan this year, but based on his early performances, he is a real gem.

1 - Trey Nyoni

Trey Nyoni is a player that has been on the radar for many Liverpool fans when he made his debut at just 16 years and 243 days old in the FA Cup against Southampton.

It's hard to believe he is still only 19 years old, and after his performance last night you'd think he has been playing senior football for years.

In just 45 minutes he was confidently setting the pace and tempo of the game, as well as looking to progress the ball quickly through line breaking passes.

Liverpool's number 42 made eight passes into the final third, made five recoveries and had a 94% pass accuracy.

What stands out is just how impressed Andoni Iraola was with his performance, saying after the game:

"Trey is very good on the ball, very calm. He reads situations well. [...] He's always confident on the ball."

Alexis Mac Allister and Curtis Jones will need to ensure their performances are up to scratch this season, because Nyoni looks more than ready to be a part of the first team squad.

Every one of these five players will be looking to impress again in Liverpool's final pre-season game of the US tour in Chicago against Leeds on the 2nd of August at 8pm BST.
