A dive into the data behind Liverpool's pair of 5-goal wins over West Ham this season

The Reds have beaten West Ham by scoring 5 goals twice this season, but what's the reason behind their incredible success against the Hammers?

The first game the Reds played against West Ham this season was in the Carabao Cup third round, winning 5-1 thanks to goals from Diogo Jota, Cody Gakpo, and Mo Salah.

In this match, Liverpool had complete control of the game, with 62% possession, 21 shots, and 534 passes.

They created six big chances to only 1 on the night for the Hammers. They took 19 of their shots from inside the penalty area, further showcasing their dominance on the night as West Ham could not get out of their own half.

An astounding 91% pass accuracy and domination of the midfield likely helped win the game, although a red card given to Edson Alvarez in the 76th minute likely helped make the score much higher.

The second meeting took place Sunday, with another dominating performance from Liverpool. The 5-0 win in the Premier League saw goals spread pretty evenly across the team.

Perhaps more impressive, Liverpool had an xG of 2.92 in this match and yet, they put five past a hapless West Ham defense. 17 of their 22 shots came from the in the box as once again, they were on the front foot and never let off.

The goal scorers were Salah, Cody Gakpo, Luis Diaz, Trent Alexander-Arnold, and Diogo Jota. While the Reds only maintained 55% possession and completed less passes than the prior game, the highlight here was the defense, as West Ham failed to get a single shot on target.

Liverpool did not receive a single yellow card, which further emphasizes the discipline on show today.

As I've said in my articles before, the highlight of this phenomenal Liverpool team this season is the midfield. Alexis Mac Allister, Dominik Szoboszlai, and Ryan Gravenberch specifically have been absolutely amazing at controlling the play and building out from the back.

So far, Szoboszlai has had 2 goals and 2 assists in the Premier League this season, while Mac Allister has 1 goal and 2 assists. These numbers may not seem amazing at first glance, but considering how influential they are to the creation of the goals the Reds do score, they simply cannot be overlooked.

West Ham has been struggling to find form this season, even though their last five matches were 2 wins, 2 draws, and a loss.

They've suffered losses due to red cards, so they seem to have an issue with discipline on the pitch, which leads to them losing games where they could've drawn or even won.

However, while the red card helped Liverpool get a win in the first matchup, there was no red card today, and the result was even better, so there are clearly more issues than meets the eye when it comes to the Hammers this season.
