As Liverpool prepares for their Boxing Day clash with the Foxes of Leicester City, one can't help but harken back to some of the recent meetings between these two proud clubs across all competitions.
The Reds have 56 wins all-time against 41 defeats and 25 draws when they stand opposite Leicester on the pitch. It might not be the dominating history you would have expected, but it's still a solid ratio from a Liverpool perspective.
In recent years, it has been more one-way traffic for the Reds. Let's take a look back at the four most recent meetings between these two sides.
Sep. 27th, 2023 - Liverpool 3 Leicester City 1 - League Cup 3rd Rd
With the Foxes contesting last season in the Championship, it has been over a year since these two have played each other.
The last meeting took place in fall of last season where the Reds came away winners after scoring two goals after the 70th minute through Dominik Szoboszlai and Diogo Jota.
Youngster Ben Doak was in the Starting XI for this one, as he was in the midst of what we thought was going to be his Liverpool breakout campaign before injuries took hold and ended his momentum before it really began.
The Reds also featured Luke Chambers, Stefan Bajčetić and Jarell Quansah as Jurgen Klopp at the time was thinking both long-term and was trying to keep his side fresh.
The Anfield crowd was sent home happy as they saw Liverpool progress into the next round at the expense of Leicester.
May 15th, 2023 - Liverpool 3 Leicester City 0 - Premier League
This Premier League showdown was the Curtis Jones show as he bagged a brace, inspiring a comfortable victory for Liverpool at the King Power Stadium.
This victory for Klopp's side prevented a a 3-game losing streak away to Leicester for the first time since 1962.
The likes of James Maddison and Youri Tielemans were still plying their trade for the Foxes in this one as they were included in the Starting XI for then manager Dean Smith. It was a full strength Liverpool with names like Mohamed Salah, Virgil van Dijk, Alisson Becker and more all getting the start.
Fabinho anchored the midfield in what would turn out to be one of his final matches playing in the famous Red shirt before making his move to Saudi Arabia.
It was two quick-strike first half goals from Jones that put the match to bed early as he showed he could be a true box-to-box midfielder when given the chance to get forward.
Dec. 30th, 2022 - Liverpool 2 Leicester City 1 - Premier League
The Foxes came into this match at Anfield with a dubious record in recent times at the storied venue. This defeat was their 13th consecutive trip without a win on Liverpool's famous home ground.
Despite going ahead on a lighting fast counter that was finished off by Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall in only the fourth minute, they still could not get the job done.
It was not a banner day for Liverpool by any means as it was a nightmare evening for Leicester defender Wout Faes who was the culprit of two separate own goals in this match. The second, in the 45th minute, would prove decisive on a very frustrating night for the visitors.
This fixture saw Jordan Henderson playing central defense and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain getting the nod in the midfield alongside Thiago and Harvey Elliott. Naby Keita would come on for Ox if that is a sign of where the midfield stood at this time.
The Reds clearly got lucky, but they gladly took the full three points.
Feb. 10th, 2022 - Liverpool 2 Leicester City 0 - Premier League
The final entry on this trip down memory lane takes us to the cold months in early '22 where Leicester came to Anfield riding a two-match winning streak in the league and had real hopes of getting a result in this one.
Diogo Jota had other ideas as he secured himself a brace with a goal in either half as Liverpool held firm defensively to secure the clean sheet and maximum points.
The Reds front three in this one from the start was Luis Diaz-Roberto Firmino-Diogo Jota, showcasing the diversity upfront that we still see today.
Brendan Rodgers was trying to get one over on his former employers but he was unable to get any significant attacking threats from Patson Daka or Ademola Lookman.
The win pushed Liverpool's unbeaten streak at Anfield to 123 matches when leading at halftime in the Premier League dating back to December of 2009. These goals put Jota over 100 combined for club and country in his career.
