Former Liverpool defender Andy Robertson was the latest guest on the popular podcast Stick to Football, where the Scotland international came face-to-face with Roy Keane – who famously called him a “baby” after Robertson’s altercation with a linesman in 2023.
While that famous clip was discussed, the panel also got stuck into all things football, including Robertson’s dream 5-a-side team of players he’s played with.
The former Liverpool player joined the Reds from Hull in 2017, making a total of 378 appearances before departing the club last summer for a new challenge at Tottenham Hotspur.
Robertson confessed “It was always Tottenham” when opening up about his decision to leave Liverpool, even admitting to following their results at the back end of the 2025/26 season in the hope they remained in the Premier League:
“I think in January time it started to become real that I was going to leave and that’s when I came to peace with it really,” the 32-year-old told Gary Neville.
“It was always Tottenham as long as they stayed up. At that point I didn’t quite want to go to the Championship with Tottenham so that was the thing, I ended up getting invested in Tottenham games.”
While the Scotland captain has had a tough start to life at Spurs, he’s already seen enough of James Maddison to make him the only non-Liverpool player in his dream 5-a-side team.
The first of the four Liverpool players joining the England international is, unsurprisingly, Alisson Becker between the sticks. The Brazilian was a mainstay in goal during Robertson’s time at Liverpool, joining in the Scot’s second season and establishing himself as the best goalkeeper in the world during that period.
While Robbo only went for one defender in his team, when that defender is Virgil van Dijk, do you really need anyone else? The Dutchman joined six months after Robertson and the two struck up a fantastic relationship on the left-hand side of Liverpool’s defence, winning nine trophies together.
Joining Maddison in midfield is one of the Spurs players he included.
Speaking on The Overlap panel when asked which player had impressed him most at Spurs, Robertson said: “Madders – five-a-side player.”
While Thiago Alcântara’s time at Liverpool was short and plagued by injuries, there was no shying away from the technical ability he possessed.
Completing the team up top is Mohamed Salah. While Robertson gave an honourable mention to Roberto Firmino, no Liverpool player quite reached the heights that the Egyptian has over the last ten years. Joining and departing at the same time as Robbo, the pair shared an unforgettable nine seasons, averaging a trophy a season.
So that’s Alisson, van Dijk, Thiago, Maddison and Salah – you wouldn’t fancy your chances if you turned up at your local Power League and they were your opponents, would you?
