Even though Liverpool have very little tangible left to fight for, Arne Slot appears to be a man fighting for his job. On Sunday, the Reds were beaten 3-2 by Manchester United at Old Trafford. After a dismal first half display, goals from Dominik Szoboszlai and then Cody Gakpo got the visitors back on level terms shortly after the interval, only for Kobbie Mainoo to fire home the winner.

As a result, Liverpool have now been beaten home and away by both Manchester United and Manchester City in the same season for the first time in 113 years.

Liverpool's record vs Manchester clubs 1912/13

  • 29 March 1913: Liverpool 0-2 Manchester United.
  • 18 January 1913: Manchester City 4-1 Liverpool.
  • 23 November: Manchester United 3-1 Liverpool.
  • 21 September: Liverpool 1-2 Manchester City.

Back in the 1912/13 season, Liverpool finished 13th, winning 16 First Division fixtures but losing 17. Meantime, Sunderland were crowned champions for the fifth time and Woolwich Arsenal were relegated; a repeat of both is not on the cards this time round.

Nevertheless, return to modern times, Sunday was the 19th loss Slot has suffered this season, if you include their defeat on penalties in the FA Community Shield against Crystal Palace. Their tally of 11 league loses is the club's most in a single campaign since 2014/15, form that ultimately saw Brendan Rodgers replaced by Jürgen Klopp the following October. So, could Slot soon be replaced too?

Well, based on the mixed reporting, it would appear as though the Liverpool hierarchy are undecided. The Dutchman led the Reds to their record-equalling 20th league title just 12 months ago, but this campaign certainly has not gone to plan.

Many fans believe a change of head coach is required, but it is impossible to quantify the impact of Diogo Jota's tragic passing. Meanwhile, Alexander Isak, Giovanni Leoni, Wataru Endō, Conor Bradley and now Hugo Ekitiké have all suffered long-term injuries, while integrating £450 million of new recruits was never going to be an easy task.

Having said that, the spectre of Xabi Alonso looms large, and Liverpool surely can't squander the opportunity to appoint the Spaniard, if he is indeed interested. The Reds' three remaining fixtures see them host Chelsea on Saturday lunchtime, travel to Aston Villa and then welcome Brentford to Anfield on the final day. Even three straight wins may not change the minds of supporters against Slot staying.
