It appeared like Xabi Alonso would be the perfect fit to replace Arne Slot at Liverpool. He is a former Reds player and a highly rated young coach. However, he went to Chelsea. It is now unclear who the obvious candidate to replace Slot is. The likes of Luis Enrique and Unai Emery have been mentioned. It is difficult to see them leaving their current jobs at Paris Saint-Germain and Aston Villa, respectively. Therefore, here are all the potential realistic successors to Arne Slot at Liverpool:

Every potential Arne Slot replacement at Liverpool ranked from worst to best

5. Steven Gerrard

It is difficult to see Steven Gerrard getting the job full-time straight away. However, he could come in to steady the ship mid-way through the season if Slot is sacked. Other Premier League clubs have done this in the past; for example, Michael Carrick at Manchester United and Frank Lampard in his second spell as Chelsea manager.

Gerrard was considered to be a top manager when he was at Rangers. He won the Scottish Premiership and then went to Aston Villa. The move to Villa was expected to be a stepping stone to the Liverpool job. However, his time in the Midlands was a disaster. Gerrard has only managed Al-Ettifaq in the Saudi Pro League since.

4. Pep Lijnders

Pep Lijnders is available this summer after leaving his post as Pep Guardiola's assistant, as the Manchester City head coach also left the Etihad Stadium. Lijnders is a highly rated number two, also from his time working as Jurgen Klopp's assistant at Liverpool. However, he has not lasted long as the manager of a club; Lijnders had brief stints with NEC Nijmegen and Red Bull Salzburg. Some coaches are better off just being assistants.

3. Oliver Glasner

Oliver Glasner won the FA Cup with Crystal Palace last season and could claim European glory this campaign. Palace face Rayo Vallecano in the Europa Conference League final tonight. Glasner has experience of success in Europe as he won the Europa League with Eintracht Frankfurt.

Glasner is leaving Palace this summer, as he got frustrated at the club continuing to sell its best players. He is available, but the Eagles had a disappointing Premier League campaign this season, finishing 15th.

2. Sebastian Hoeneß

Liverpool fans this season have been harking back to the days of Klopp. Even Slot's title win has now often been recognized as him doing it with Klopp's team. The chances of Klopp ever returning are slim as he appears to have a cushty job right now as the head of global soccer at Red Bull. However, Sebastian Hoeneß is considered to be the next Klopp.

Hoeneß's high-pressing style of play with Stuttgart has been likened to Klopp's heavy metal football. Stuttgart finished fourth in the Bundesliga this season and reached the DFB-Pokal final. He is a strong candidate to replace Slot.

1. Andoni Iraola

Andoni Iraola worked wonders at AFC Bournemouth, helping them finish sixth in the Premier League this season. This was particularly impressive as they sold the likes of Dean Huijson, Milos Kerkez, and Illia Zabarnyi in the summer transfer window. They then lost Antoine Semenyo to Manchester City in January.

It was announced earlier in the campaign that Iraolo would be leaving the Cherries this summer. He was linked with Chelsea and the club he played for, Athletic Bilbao. However, both clubs have appointed other managers. His Premier League experience and attacking style of play make him a good fit for Liverpool.
