Liverpool Football Club are no strangers to seeing young talented forwards come through their ranks, and go on to hit high levels, either at Anfield, or elsewhere.
Recently, we have seen names like Jayden Danns, Rio Ngumoha and Lewis Koumas as players who are young bright talents that could do great things in this game.
It is Koumas who has most recently made headlines for his performance while on international duty with Wales, where he scored his first international goal in their 1-1 draw with Ghana.
The 20-year old is seen as a bright piece of the Welsh national team present and future, and he might still have an outside chance of making an impact at Liverpool going forward as well.
Welsh legend sings Koumas' praises
Former Liverpool and Wales player, and current Wales national team manager Craig Bellamy, spoke glowingly about Koumas following his performance against Ghana.
Bellamy said; "I see him as a real future player for Wales who’s going to have a big say, I'm delighted for him."
Having played 549 times across nine clubs that included Liverpool, Manchester City, Newcastle, Celtic and Norwich, he is more than qualified to have this opinion on a player's future. Bellamy also played nearly 80 times for his country, so he knows all about the journey ahead for Koumas.
The Wales boss would go on to be clear about just where he sees Koumas contributing the most.
"[He is a] nine because we don’t really have any nines coming through and we do have a lot of wingers, brilliant wingers, he could definitely be a huge asset for us on the wing but, due to our lack of nines coming through the system, we’ve used him a lot in training that way and he’s really been electric. There’s a lot to like about Koumy. He’s such a young player and I’m over the moon he got his goal because he’s deserved it."
That is some high praise for a player that has clearly left an impression on his national team boss, and it appears he will have no shortage of opportunities when it comes to his Wales career.
Significant match experience already
Koumas is coming off a 2025/26 season that saw him make 44 appearances (40 coming in the EFL Championship) across loan spells with Birmingham City and newly promoted Hull City.
The season before that, he made 49 appearances for Stoke City in all competitions, scoring six goals to go with 3 assists. Koumas netted four times during this past season, with three coming after his January move to Hull.

While 10 goals is a modest return over the last two seasons, I am more intrigued by him playing 93 times across the Championship, FA Cup and League Cup.
That is invaluable game time for a young player who wants to develop and learn as much as they can, as fast as they can. Seeing him hold up to the rigors that is the Championship grind is a strong endorsement of both his physical and mental makeup.
While he was not a full-time starter for the Tigers, he played in high stakes matches and felt the pressure of a promotion chase. That is an environment where some young players shrink away.
It appears Koumas has done the opposite. Capping off another solid development season by scoring his first Wales goal is the icing on an extremely valuable 2025/26 campaign for the 20-year old.
A Liverpool future?
With the presence of Alexander Isak, Hugo Ekitike when he returns, Cody Gakpo, Ngumoha and whoever the club signs, it will be difficult to envision Koumas forcing his way into the Starting XI at Anfield anytime soon.
However, if Bellamy follows through on his plan to integrate Koumas as a nine for Wales, that would give him a significant boost in position versatility and a coach like Andoni Iraola could value that.
Could he continue to grow and become a 25-30 appearance player at Liverpool? It's possible for sure, especially if he continues on his current trajectory. Another loan spell might be on the cards, and it will be the summer of 2027 that could really decide if he has a Liverpool future or not.
Yet, if Iraola saw enough from him in preseason and decided to bring him back as a substitute option, I would not be opposed. Again, nearly 100 appearances over the last two seasons means he's more experienced then most youngsters at this stage of their careers.
For now, Koumas will be relishing scoring his first senior national team goal and savoring the adoration of a Wales legend. His future will come soon enough.
