With Trent Alexander-Arnold departing Liverpool this summer, a big role at the club is set to become available. The role of Vice-Captain is a big spot to take and whoever does will have a big responsiblity.
There are some contenders, some obvious, some not so, and we will try to discuss the best of them here.
Who will be Virgil van Dijk’s deputy next season?
Andrew Robertson
Liverpool’s current third captain is arguably the strongest contender for the position.
A leader on and off the pitch, Robertson has captained Liverpool on a few occasions including against PSV Eindhoven in a rotated team, in a 3-0 defeat to Wolves in 2023, and in both legs of Liverpool’s Round of 16 Europa League tie against Sparta Prague in 2024.
The 31-year-old has also captained Scotland since 2018.

Having made 340 appearances for Liverpool, Robertson has been a key part of Liverpool’s success of recent times.
There is a small amount of uncertainty over his future as a starter as Liverpool will likely look to sign Milos Kerkez in his position this summer.
Alisson Becker
One of Liverpool’s most important players, and arguably the greatest goalkeeper in the world.
Alisson Becker, 32, has been an integral part of Liverpool’s 20th Premier League title win, he has played 25 times in the Premier League this campaign.
The Brazilian has captained the Reds on a few occasions, including in the 2021/22 Champions League against FC Porto and AC Milan, and in an FA Cup tie in 2024 against Norwich City.

Alisson also captained Brazil in a 3-2 victory over Mexico in 2024.
He is also a part of Liverpool’s leadership group, and it is often when he is on the pitch that he sets the standards for the rest of the team.
Mohamed Salah
Liverpool’s Egyptian King, now back for another two years, Salah sets standards and records on the pitch.
Often quiet in the media, Salah was more vocal when it came to his contract.

Salah captained Liverpool in the Reds’ 4-0 victory over Austrian side LASK in the Europa League group stage and in a fourth round FA Cup victory over AFC Bournemouth in 2023.
He is Liverpool’s third-highest goal scorer of all-time and should be a genuine candidate for Liverpool’s vice-captaincy vacancy.
Salah is also a part of Liverpool’s leadership group.
Wataru Endo
A bit of a left-field inclusion, but Wataru Endo has genuine captaincy credentials.
Endo is the current captain of the Japanese national team, and has captained VFB Stuttgart, and on occasion Shonan Bellmare and Urawa Red Diamonds, his former clubs.

The 32-year-old doesn’t often feature in the Liverpool starting XI, which could limit his usefulness as a vice-captain.
There is also a world where Liverpool accept a bid for him this summer.
Endo though is one of Liverpool’s elder statesmen and the kind of personality you could have faith in as a vice-captain.
