It has been clear for some weeks now that Liverpool require defensive reinforcements. Well, a new recruit is now very much, literally and figuratively, on his way. On Friday night, completely out of nowhere, it was widely reported that the Reds will sign Ronald Araújo on a season-long loan deal from Barcelona. The agreement includes a €55 million option to buy which, fair to say, they are unlikely to activate, but you never know.
Ahead of the move being made official, speaking after the Friuli Venezia Giulia Cup in Udine, Barça head coach Hansi Flick had this parting message for the defender.

As reported by James Pearce of the Athletic on Sunday morning, the Uruguayan defender "has landed in the North West" and is heading to AXA Training Centre to formerly undergo his medical. It remains to be seen if he will be in attendance at Anfield as Andoni Iraola's team take on Ligue 1 side Monaco in a pre-season friendly on Sunday afternoon.

So, why has this move come about, and why has it been met with, to put it mildly, such widespread indifference? Well, the 27 year old can be deployed at both right-back and centre-back, two positions that Liverpool badly require reinforcement. In the middle, with Jérémy Jacquet still yet to feature in pre-season, while Joe Gomez and Giovanni Leoni are injured, it very much continues to be unclear who will be Virgil van Dijk's partner at St James' Park on the Premier League's opening weekend in a fortnight.
At right-back meantime, with Conor Bradley still a few months away from returning, it remains to be seen if Iraola trust Jeremie Frimpong, in a way that Arne Slot did not. Well, at his peak, Araújo was one of the best defensive full-backs in the world. Of his 213 appearances for Barça, around 85% have come as a central defender. However, his most high-profile outings as a full-back came in Clásicos.
Xavi would regularly utilise Araújo there to nullify Vinícius Júnior, often completely shutting down the Brazilian, showcasing the full extent of his defensive acumen and prowess. In more recent times though, his importance at Barcelona had diminished.
After being sent off during a Champions League defeat at Stamford Bridge against Chelsea last November, this the final in a long line of chaotic displays, he was given a six week mental health break by Flick. The German coach putting the defender's wellbeing above all else. He spent much of this time at a retreat in Jerusalem, before returning just before Christmas. Thus, it is impossible to know just what version of Araújo has landed on Merseyside, but Iraola will hope he is a player determined to get back to his brilliant best.
