Since the departure of Jarell Quansah and the injury of Joe Gomez, who is today back in full training, Liverpool fans have been nervous about the center-back options at Arne Slot's disposal ahead of this season.

They can be forgiven for harkening back to the tumultuous 2020/21 season, during which Jurgen Klopp lost all of his senior central defender options to injury.

These fears should be quelled a bit following the news that broke on Wednesday: Liverpool have reportedly agreed a transfer fee with Parma for talented, young defender Giovanni Leoni.

The Deal

The news was first broke by the reputable Paul Joyce. It should also be specified that Joyce himself did not explicitly state that a fee had been finalized, rather that the clubs are 'closing in' on an initial £26 million deal plus further unspecified add-ons.

Joyce stated that Liverpool think so highly of the Italian that there was never any thought given to the idea of loaning him back to Parma for developmental reasons, a hypothetical that other journalists made out to be possible.

He goes on to report that the Reds are set to beat AC Milan and Inter Milan to Leoni, as well as knocking back late interest from Premier League sides such as Newcastle United and Manchester United.

Fabrizio Romano took things a step further, reporting that a deal has been fully agreed between the two clubs for a fee of around €35m with a sell-on clause.

Romano also is in agreement with Joyce that a loan for Leoni was never a part of discussions between the clubs.

Romano ends with asserting that there was no need to convince the Italian to leave his country, as he wanted to make the move to Anfield.

At the time of this being published, Paul Gorst is the only other Liverpool source to comment on this transfer's progression, with his reporting being in in line with Joyce. He cited the same fee and that the deal is closing in on a conclusion.

This summer, Romano has been ahead of Liverpool-centric sources in terms of reporting an agreement hours or even days in advance. This transfer is likely another example of that.

It is an exciting deal, with Leoni thought very highly of and seemingly a player for both the current and for the future. Hopefully, Liverpool can get this deal over the line as soon as possible to ensure Leoni is quickly brought up to speed.
