The summer transfer window only closed three and a half weeks ago, while it is 99 days until the winter window opens. Nevertheless, as we enter the longest international break in history, the transfer speculation has started up again.
As reported by Graeme Bailey of Team Talk, Liverpool are interested in re-signing Tyler Morton from Olympique Lyonnais. He adds that Crystal Palace and Nottingham Forest are also "keeping tabs" on the 23 year old defensive midfielder.
Born in Wallasey, Morton joined the Reds' academy at the age of seven, making 14 senior appearances, of which nine were starts. Following loan spells at Blackburn Rovers and Hull City, he was sold to Lyon for €15 million in August 2025, with Liverpool retaining a 20% sell on clause. Well, this move to France has done wonders for Morton's career.

Pretty much from day one, Morton has been an every game starter for Paulo Fonseca's side. Since the start of last season, he has featured in 53 of les Gones' 58 matches, missing two suspended and three due to injury, starting 49 times.
Lyon finished fourth in Ligue 1 last season, with Morton scoring as they beat Sparta Prague in August's Champions League qualifier, albeit they were ousted by Fenerbahçe in the play-off round. Nevertheless, while this defeat forced the last minute sales of Ainsley Maitland-Niles and Malick Fofana, Morton remains among Lyon's most prized assets.

As the statistics underline, Morton's superpower is his passing, raking highly for all of those metrics across Ligue 1 last season. He does not rank quite as highly when it comes to defensive statistics, tackles, interceptions, clearances and duels won, albeit this is partially due to the fact Lyon are a dominant team, finishing fourth in the table, as well as for possession.
Morton is deployed at the base of midfield by Fonseca, very much the conductor in this team. Well, this is something Andoni Iraola's squad really lacks. Dominik Szoboszlai is being forced to play deeper, in an attempt to accommodate Florian Wirtz, while neither Alexis Mac Allister nor Ryan Gravenberch have nailed down a starting spot.
Thus, perhaps bringing Morton back to Merseyside would be the best solution for all involved. If he continues to impress at Parc Olympique Lyonnais, there may be a growing clamour for this to come to pass.
