On a cold and very rainy night on Wednesday, Liverpool Football Club booked their 20th all-time trip to the English League Cup Semifinals.
They got there with a well-earned 2-1 victory away to Southampton even as the Reds featured several youngsters throughout the contest.
Goals from Darwin Nunez and Harvey Elliott were enough to see them through to the final four once again as they seek to defend their triumph in this competition last season. Let's take a look at how Liverpool's players rated in the win.
Caoimhin Kelleher - 7/10 - Admittedly did not have a lot of work to do, but he was well beaten to the far post by a Saints stunner. However, made a sterling point-blank save thereafter to preserve the win.
Trent Alexander-Arnold - 7/10 - TAA captained the side out in this one and he was at his creative best throughout. His vision began the sequence that led to Darwin's goal and he placed dangerous passes all over. Subbed.
Jarell Quansah - 6.5/10 - This was better from the lad as he looked better than he has in recent weeks. Was asked to clean up several times at the back and just about did enough each time.
Wataru Endo - 7/10 - This kind of match was perfect for how he plays, physical and lots of grit. Snapped into challenges and moved the ball well in possession. Still a solid squad player.
Joe Gomez - 6.5/10 - A solid outing from the Reds veteran as he did not make the splashy play but he defended well enough when call upon. Subbed.
Trey Nyoni - 7/10 - Did not look out of place in this one at all as his close control on the ball was superb. His tight turns broke him away from defenders several times. A bright, bright talent.
Harvey Elliott - 7.5/10 - Snagged the second goal of the night and he was constantly involved in the attack and buildup play. He looks to have shaken off any injury rust.
Alexis Mac Allister - 6.5/10 - Had a great chance saved in the first half but otherwise was quite limited in this one. Moved the ball along quickly but didn't really play that back-breaking pass.
Cody Gakpo - 7/10 - He played with confidence once again as "Carabao Cody" struck again, this time through an assist on Elliott's goal and several other attacking moves down the left. Subbed.
Darwin Nunez - 7/10 - His presence was a nuisance for the Southampton defense throughout and his pace to run in-behind got him one-on-one with the keeper and he made no mistake. A confident finish which was great to see.
SUBS:
Federico Chiesa - 6.5/10 - What a nice sight seeing No. 14 take the field for Liverpool and he looked a little rusty at first, but grew into things. Did well to create a chance for himself that was goal bound before it was cleared off the line.
Kostas Tsimikas - 6/10 - It was an average display after coming on at halftime in this one. Did not add a lot to the attack and was fine in defense.
Diogo Jota - 6/10 - Did not have a lot of chances after coming on. Did play Chiesa through on goal, but otherwise, not many dangerous moments to speak of. Minutes for the weekend.
James McConnell - 6.5/10 - Despite getting booked for a feisty tackle, the young midfielder showed no fear as he stepped into challenges and was strong on the ball.
Jayden Danns - N/A - A welcome treat to see him back on the pitch and he worked hard for the side to see the game out.
