Liverpool’s away form under Arne Slot is becoming impossible to ignore

Was that the night when Arne Slot's fate was sealed? On Friday, Liverpool were demolished 4-2 by Aston Villa, the Reds completely flattered by the end scoreline, which suggests it was close. In the second half alone, the Claret and Blue Army had ten shots, of which seven were on target, and created five big chances, seemingly one on one against Giorgi Mamardashvili every 30 seconds.

This result saw Unai Emery's team leapfrog Slot's side into fourth, meaning Liverpool still have work to do to rubber stamp Champions League qualification. On the final day, they welcome Brentford to Anfield, and only a victory will cement a top five finish for sure. After winning the league last year, this season has been a disaster, especially when it comes to Liverpool's away form.

Liverpool's away record vs Premier League's top 10

  • Wins: 1. Draws: 1. Loses: 7. Goals scored: 11. Goals conceded: 20.

Of teams currently in the top half of the Premier League, newly-promoted Sunderland are the only side Liverpool have managed to beat away from home all season. Slot's team also earned a turgid goalless draw at Arsenal in January, failing to have a shot on target in a Premier League game for the first time since 2010 that night. Those aside, they have lost the other seven such fixtures, conceding 20 goals and scoring only 11.

There are plenty of damning statistics about Liverpool's form on the road this season. Arguably, the worst one of all is that only West Ham and Burnley, both destine for the drop, have shipped more goals on their travels. The fact that the Reds rank second for shots. but only eight for shots on target and fifth when it comes to xG underlines the fact they have lacked a clinical edge.

Away from Merseyside, the Reds have lost each of their last four in the league, beaten at Wolves, Brighton, Manchester United and now Aston Villa, hence why supporters have seen enough. Well, the mood around the club was not helped on Sunday morning when it was officially confirmed that Xabi Alonso had been appointed manager of Chelsea, a move that surprised everybody.

This leaves Liverpool with no obvious candidate to come in, amid a back drop of discontent against the manager from both supporters, as well as the departing Mohamed Salah. Thus, it will be fascinating to see how the next few weeks pan out.
